Aldec's New Source Revision Control Interface Provides Superior Design Management

Henderson Nevada, February 8, 2001 -- Aldec, Inc., a leading supplier of HDL design entry and verification software for programmable logic devices, announced today an interface to third-party revision control software from its Active-HDL environment. The Source Revision Control Interface allows users to maintain project integrity and is particularly useful to teams working on large SoC projects over an Intranet or the Internet.

Benefits of Source Revision Control Interface
The external revision control software extends Active-HDL users' control over source files and improves their security. Users can directly control all versions of source files from the Active-HDL environment and withdraw the latest changes in a design or show a list of differences between the selected versions. When files are added to the Source Revision Control System, they are backed up in a database and made available to other team members. Since Source Revision Control allows a number of designers to work on the same project, it particularly improves teamwork as it allows each engineer to compare his or her work results online with the results of other engineers. The revisions that have been made to a file can be saved separately so that the old file version may be recovered at any time. Group members can view the latest version of any project, make changes, and save the new version in the database.

" As team-based designs exceed one million gates, revision control and project management become critical in maintaining the design's integrity," stated David Rinehart, Marketing Director for Aldec, Inc. "The Source Revision Control Interface in Active-HDL gives users access to external tools to compare various versions of the project while managing the source files with a high level of security from within the environment."

It is also possible to use third-party revision control tools independently from Active-HDL. However, it is recommended to perform all file-related operations from within Active-HDL through its advanced interface. Active-HDL complies with the SCCS standard and supports every Source Revision Control system compatible with this standard. All popular source control tools supporting the SCCS standard, such as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe™, ClearCase™, MKS Integrity™, Perforce™, StarBase™, and QVCS™, can be accessed directly from Active-HDL.

Typical Functionality Provided by Source Control Tools

  • A user may store designs in a source control system database and then utilize them under control of the system
  • Display the history of accessed and altered files
  • Show differences between design versions
  • Automatic Check Out notification and read only privileges when files are being used by others
  • Automatic Check In of files when closing designs

Availability
Source Revision Control Interface will be available February 12, 2001 and will be included at no cost in the Plus and Expert Editions of Active-HDL 4.2. Active-HDL includes HDL, State Machine, and Block Diagram & Editors, Automatic Testbench Generation, Waveform Viewer/Editor, choice of VHDL, Verilog or mixed VHDL/Verilog/EDIF simulation. Active-HDL with Source Revision Control Interface starts at $5,200.00 and includes the first year of maintenance.
